street, acorns from the side of a trail, bougainvillea from a neighbor’s garden…all gathered together here as if blown in from all directions north, south, east, and west in California. The light box on the left, “in the studio”, evokes Dutch Master still-life paintings, with a mix of native and naturalized flowers and fruit co-existing in harmony. I drew inspiration from the Schindler House itself, with its pinwheel plan, connecting indoors to outdoors, and four rooms, “one for each person to ‘express his or her individuality’” but coming together to create a whole. Flowers for Schindler is a modular floral installation with four spatial volumes that can be placed in different configurations. It uses industrial materials to unexpected effect. The flowers are meant to evoke a wildflower meadow, in dialogue with the rows of flowing grasses planted outside the house. The most fragrant tuberose, freesia, sweet peas, hyacinth. Weird enormous seed pods, ghostly moss, and gesturing branches. Velvety geranium leaves and lavender, sticky rosemary. Celebrating the dedication and ingenuity of the flower farmers, the artwork showcases the varying forms and shapes of different dahlia cultivars, including ball dahlias, decorative dahlias, cactus dahlias, and anemone-flowered dahlias, each with its own natural geometry. The flower field is activated by the native pollinators and animals inhabiting it, showcasing the diverse flora and fauna that create a thriving ecosystem. Visitors are invited to imagine themselves as inhabitants of this flower world as well. We are proposing an artwork with two components, a mural on the building facade and sculptural light poles in the plaza. In the mural, one jumping rabbit is shown with the moon, while in the light poles, a couple of frolicking rabbits themselves act as light reflectors, referencing indigenous american and asian folklore of a rabbit that lives on the moon. The overarching theme was the memento mori, still life paintings that speak to the temporality of the world. The first iteration was meant to evoke winter in Southern California - a contradiction of lush greenery and fruit with autumnal branches and ice-toned dried botanicals. The second iteration plays on the myth of Narcissus. In Greek mythology, Narcissus was a hunter who was known for his beauty. He rejected all romantic advances, eventually falling in love with his own reflection in a pool of water. A fire follower, it is commonly found after fires in chaparral, but is also found in grasslands, coastal sage scrub, and other open habitats. Extremely variable in growth form and ecological preferences. It has escaped California and has become a weed along roadsides in central Chile. Many different pollinators feed on passiflora; this may have led to the large morphological variation in the genus. Deerweed is a fire follower, having large seeds with a tick coat. The seeds remain dormant until something causes it to crack, and allow water to enter; for buried seeds this is often fire. Historically, Higo camellias, a cultivar, were grown and cared for exclusively by samurai and priests in Japan. Camellia flower heads drop off whole, rather than as single petals. The single most important medicinal plant of the Chumash, and an integral part of religious beliefs and practices. Flower looks like two monkey faces! Leaves are sticky! Adaptations to fire include evergreen leaves, thick bark, and sprouting ability. Evergreen leaves allow coast live oak to allocate greater amounts of energy to recovery from fire than to replacing the entire crown annually. Coast live oak bark is the thickest among California oaks; it is mainly composed of live inner bark with little dead outer tissue. Coast live oaks sprout from the main trunk and upper crown even after severe burning. Most subspecies produce offshoots at the base, so a cluster of clones continue to grow and reproduce. It is pollinated by the California yucca moth, in a classic example of symbiosis. The female moth colects sacks of pollen grains and forms them into a massive ball. She then flies to another plant and lays a single egg inside the ovary of the flower. Before going out to hunt deer, a Chumash hunter would stand in the smoke from burning leafy green laurel twigs. They believed the deer were attracted to this scent, but also that it made them dizzy and easier to shoot. The seeds of this plant may remain viable for many years; the oldest recorded lotus germination is from seeds 1,300 years old recovered from a dry lakebed in northeastern China. The lotuses in the Echo Park Lake were planted in the early 1900s and nearly died out in 2008. The common name “Mariposa” comes from the Spanish for “butterfly",” describing the large floating flowers. John Muir called the sugar pine the “king of the conifers.” The common name comes from the sweet resin, which Native Americans used as a sweetener. The common name “manzanita” is Spanish for “little apple”, a reference to this species’ edible fruit. Arctostaphylos was used by indigenous people throughout California. The berries were eaten fresh, or dried and ground into flour, cooked into mush or biscuits, or made into a beverage. The berries and leaves were also used medicinally, and smoked. Eastwood manzanita grows from a basal burl which can re-sprout after fire.
